Abstract

This Study Examines the Issue of the Separation of Religion and State in Algeria during the French Colonial Era, Focusing on the Hajj Ritual as a Model of Religious and Political Interference. The Study relies on El-Basa'ir Newspaper as its Primary Media Source, in addition to the Official Archival Documents Issued by the Algerian General Government. The Study reviews the French Laws Separating Religion and the State, including the Laws of (1905/1907 CE). It also Discusses the Contradictions in the Application of these Laws in the Colonial Algeria, particularly with regard to Freedom of Religious Education, the Independence of Mosques, and the Sharia Law. It also Explains how these Laws were Part of the Colonial Policy to Control the Religious Affairs of Algerians and Empty Secularism of its Original Content when it Came to the Colonies. At the Level of the Hajj Ritual; The Study Reveals the Complex Organization of Voyages, whether by Land, Sea, or Air, including the Administrative Requirements, Medical Facilities, Transportation Companies, and Travel Costs. The Archival Documents and Newspapers also Demonstrate how the French Colonialism Used the Hajj Ritual as a Means of Surveillance and Preventing any Encounter that might Enhance National Awareness among the Algerians.
