Toward sustainable tourism development for archaeological landmarks in Algeria

Sustainable development, tourism, landmarks, archaeological, AlgeriaAbstract
Tourism in the modern era is considered one of the most important industries in the world. Many countries have become attracted to developing their tourism resources by relying on tourist attractions, especially those of heritage value. There is a close relationship between the urban design of heritage areas and the tourism sector, as sustainable development works to preserve the historical and cultural identity that expresses the civilizational and cultural roots of society. Algeria, for its part, is rich in many archaeological landmarks classified by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage sites. Through this article, we aim to highlight Algeria’s interest in enhancing the contribution of archaeological landmarks to the development of its sustainable tourism by establishing a long-term development strategy. This, in turn, reflects the concern for tangible cultural heritage and its rational management — a historical and developmental requirement linked to providing the proper and necessary foundations for sustainable tourism development.
