Islam and citizenship Al-Fârâbî as a paradigm
Keywords:
Al-Fārābī, citizenship, political philosophy, religion and philosophyAbstract
This article examines Al-Fārābī’s nuanced vision of the interwoven relationship between philosophy, politics, and religion, revealing how his reflections quietly but powerfully foreground the value of citizenship. Far from being a purely theoretical exercise, his project offers an early philosophical framework for imagining the responsible citizen and the well-ordered polity within the Arab-Islamic tradition. The study situates Al-Fārābī’s insights within a broader intellectual landscape alive with debate, where questions of reason, revelation, and power animated some of the richest discussions in medieval Islamic thought. It also highlights how the political philosophies of figures such as Ibn Sīnā, Ibn Bājja, al-Māwardī, al-Ghazālī, and Ibn Rushd deepened and diversified this legacy, collectively shaping a tradition of inquiry that remains foundational to the understanding of governance and civic life in the Islamic world.
