Algerian Saharan Travel Accounts During the Nineteenth Centur the Journeys of Al-Hajj Ben Al-Din Al-Aghouati and Abd Al-Rahman Al-Tinilani as case studies

This article aims to introduce a selection of travel accounts written during the nineteenth century by authors originating from the Algerian Sahara, and to highlight their role in the writing of Algerian history. It seeks to demonstrate the historical significance of these travel narratives as indigenous sources that document social, cultural, and intellectual life in Algeria during this period. The study focuses on two representative examples: the journey of al-Hajj Ben al-Din al-Aghouati and that of Abd al-Rahman ibn ʿUmar ibn Idris al-Tinilani. These accounts offer valuable insights into the realities of the Algerian Sahara in the nineteenth century and contribute to enriching Algerian historiography through locally grounded perspectives that have often been marginalized.
