The economic burden of diabetes in Algeria: An Analysis of direct costs
Keywords:
type 2 diabetes in Algeria, economic burden, costs, healthcare systems, public health, medical expenditureAbstract
This study aims to assess the economic burden of diabetes in Algeria by analysing direct costs. The study adopts the cost-of-illness (COI) methodology and is based on the most recent data available from the International Diabetes Federation. The results reveal a concerning increase in the prevalence of diabetes in Algeria, reaching 17.5% in 2024 compared to 7.0% in 2011, with projections indicating an expected rise to 19.3% by 2050. In 2024, the total costs associated with diabetes in Algeria amounted to US$3.11 billion, with projections indicating an increase to US$4.39 billion by 2050. Direct costs account for approximately 65% of total costs, while indirect costs represent 35%. The study provides recommendations for decision-makers and health policy stakeholders to help them develop effective strategies for the prevention and management of the disease and improve the allocation of health resources. This will help to contain the escalating economic burden of diabetes in Algeria.
